Summary: 

Watertown High School seeks a highly qualified educator for a permanent 1.0 FTE Social Studies position (grades 9-12). 

 

Responsibilities:

  • Effectively instruct high school students at a suburban secondary school at multiple academic levels.
  • Create, adapt, and/or use curricula that reflect the diverse educational, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds of the students.
  • Design clear and robust lessons using UbD methodology that incorporate challenging, clear, and standards-aligned learning objectives. 
  • Design and implement effective student-centered and student-participatory lessons.
  • Collaborate and co-teach as needed to serve a wide variety of student learning needs and styles.
  • Adapt lessons and materials as required for individual students’ documented and undocumented needs.
  • Observe and evaluate students’ performance using formative and summative assessments.
  • Create a positive, collaborative educational climate in the classroom.
  • Effectively manage student behavior in the classroom by invoking appropriate classroom management techniques.
  • Participate in contractually obligated after-school conferences and activities.
  • Initiate and participate in culturally appropriate two-way communication with families about students’ performance throughout the school year. 
  • Promptly communicate student concerns to the curriculum coordinator, guidance department, support staff, and/or building administration, as appropriate.
  • Attend and collaborate with colleagues in faculty meetings, department meetings, IEP meetings, etc as required of all faculty. 
  • Be available for a one-week AP training institute in July. 

  

Qualifications - Required

  • Appropriate Massachusetts certification in Social Studies/History and SEI Endorsement
  • Passionate about working with students and providing the individual interventions needed for success.
  • Collaboration-oriented personal and teaching philosophy.
  • Training and familiarity with lesson and materials differentiation.
  • Strong working knowledge or teaching experience with co-teaching models in a General Education setting.
  • Knowledge of the Massachusetts History and Social Science frameworks and Social Studies Literacy skills.
  • Experience with using and/or creating grading rubrics and knowledge of standards-based grading practices.

 

Qualifications - Preferred

  • Experience with Advanced Placement History at the high school level and/or extensive US History training at the collegiate level.
  • Knowledge and experience teaching world history, world history, and/or other social sciences at multiple levels.
  • Knowledge of a second language; Spanish or Portuguese preferred
