Position: Teacher - (.2 FTE) World Percussion Music WHS 

Department: Fine, Applied and Performing Arts

Location: Watertown High School

Reports to: Principal Watertown High School/Coordinator of Performing Arts

Affiliation: Watertown Educators Association

Salary range: As determined by CBA Salary Schedule, Unit A (prorated to a 0.2 FTE)

 

 

SUMMARY:  

The Watertown Public Schools seeks an outstanding World Percussion Ensemble Instructor for secondary level students.  

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  The desired candidate for the Watertown High School World Percussion Instructor position will be responsible for teaching World Percussion to students in 9th through 12th grades.  The educator will be part of a vibrant learning community and tasked with culturally responsive instruction that helps students grow in their participation, understanding and creation of culturally relevant music experiences that reflect the values and diversity of the learning community. 

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Belief in the use of multi-cultural music learning for social justice and critical/creative thinking
  • Foundational belief of the importance of “INCLUSIVITY” in Music Education
  • Proficiency in teaching a culturally relevant Music Curriculum for students at the secondary level
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Design and conduct recruitment/outreach programs to attract student participants
  • Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior to provide an orderly, productions and positive learning environment
  • Assesses and evaluates student’s growth
  • Communicates clearly and consistently with parents and learning partners on the progress of individual students
  • Contribute to Professional Learning Team regarding teaching and learning
  • Skill in selecting culturally relevant repertoire
  • Participation in a minimum of two concerts per academic year

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  • Direct high school World Percussion Ensemble students in learning technique, repertoire, choreography and performance practice
  • Provide for student participation in extracurricular performance events
  • Two annual required performances: 
    • 1. Winter Performance
    • 2. Spring Performance 
  • Guide students in leadership opportunities within the ensemble and provide mentoring opportunities for district-wide ensembles
  • Create an inclusive environment that welcomes every student to participate and create
  • Prepare lessons with clear objectives that are assessed and differentiated
  • Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social and emotional development of students

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • BA in World Percussion/Percussion
  • Experience directing ensembles and providing opportunities for performance
  • Cultural proficiency in music from non-western traditions

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
