Watertown Public Schools seeks outstanding applicants for the position of ESL Tutor at WHS.
The person in this position will work with recently arrived students to ensure that they transition into our secondary schools and help them with technological needs, understanding the US system of schooling, and building executive functioning skills for newly arrived students.
Position Responsibilities:
Working under the general supervision of the ML Director as well as building administration, and the WHS ESL Team. The successful candidate will provide ML Academic Support by tutoring ML students either in their own classroom, pushing in to support students/classes, or by pulling out students for academic support throughout the day. They will work collaboratively with members of the department and the school to support student learning and growth.
Qualifications:
- A minimum of a Bachelor's degree is required. The preferred candidate will have completed a significant amount of ESL coursework in order to ensure their English language development (ELD) services are effective in meeting the needs of Multilingual Learners (MLs). They should be engaging and assist with instruction for language development and access to content.
- The candidate will learn how to administer the WIDA ACCESS and/or the WIDA screener if they are not already familiar with these tests.
- The candidate should possess good communication and interpersonal skills in order to have an ongoing collaboration with ESL teachers and core academic teachers to ensure the students are successfully able to access the content. S/he should have experience working with and/or teaching high school students; an understanding of the needs of students at this age; a collaborative work ethic; and a commitment to inclusive pedagogy. Bilingual candidates are strongly preferred, especially if they speak Spanish, Portuguese, and/or Pashto.
- Active participation in related professional development, as well as proficient use of email, spreadsheets, Google Docs, etc. for department communication and file sharing, are preferred.
License:
A Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education license as a 5-12 ESL teacher is preferred, but not required.
